This reading group will explore the literary thriller, its evolving style, and its unique combination of artistic ambition and suspense. Reading stories of intrigue, espionage, and investigation, we will travel to capitals of world culture alongside characters caught in the extremes of life and probe the ways in which their humanity is complicated and deepened by their perilous circumstances. We'll encounter spies, con men, diplomats, and artists. This is fiction of the very highest stakes, with the highest rewards. The texts for this reading group will be The Talented Mr. Ripley, by Patricia Highsmith, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, by John le Carré The Club Dumas by Arturo Pérez-Reverte, and Distant Star, by Roberto Bolaño. Each book will be paired with a wine from the regions in which key portions of the stories take place, while group members debate the mysteries and moral dilemmas presented by these master works of fiction.

    Before Class Reading
For the first class, participants in the group should read The Talented Mr. Ripley
